Important New Health Care Legislation That Effect College Students

California law SB 1168 went into effect January 1, 2009 and federal HR 2851, require continued coverage for full-time, college -age students who take medically necessary leave of absence from school. The student must be 18 or older, covered under a parent’s health care plan and eligible for the continuation of coverage. Both laws apply to all commercial health care plans and insurers.
